Witches Bane - A SOL Short Story, Part II
It’s bones pierced through the sunken, leathery skin. Fungus and vines and leaves made home between it’s joints, twigs and bark prodded against it’s belly from the inside, occasionally showing through glimpses of torn flesh. It was something that had been made the home of every forest dwelling thing, barely standing on two gangly limbs. I stepped closer and caught a glimpse of its horrid face, eyes sockets hollow and sunken, jaw missing entirely. It didn’t seem to keep it from speaking it’s mind.
“Hahh… Wi… Ba…” the words tumbled out of it’s skull, a hoarse semi-speech that failed to convey much.
We have rules. We’re not supposed to communicate with the anomalies, allowing that can be enough for an entity to bridge the gap between us and them. That can lead to a whole ordeal of issues; possession, hexes, parasites. We have rules, and curiosity is one of the very first things they warn us about.
But sometimes, it’s really hard to resist the siren’s song.
